In Apropos Proposal is a textile assemblage consisting of screenprint on hand-dyed cotton. At the time of making, I couldn’t have articulated all the ways in which this piece now holds meaning. I knew I needed to see it. See the watermelon translated, elevated. It should have been a symbol of self-reliance. You know, like those bootstraps we’re supposed to be pulling ourselves by. And so I ask, can we backtrack? Sankofa, can we bring it back? What new power can it hold?
In just a year, the significance of this flag has grown for me, exponentially. And so, I feel compelled to share it.
